Sultan Gate was named after Sultan Hussein Mua’zzam Shah of Johor when he built his first palace, istana at Kampong Glam in 1819.
The palace was called Istana Kampong Gelam, and it has now been transformed into a cultural and historical spot – The Malay Heritage Centre.

Sultan Gate was popularly known in the 1900s for its blacksmiths and foundries.
In the 1950s, it was reported that there were at least seven to eight foundries at Sultan Gate.

The last foundry closed in the mid-2000s after a fire. Today, visitors unearth pottery studios, batik fashion and graffiti walls at Sultan Arts Village.
